TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Teaching experience
I am a career artist and art instructor so I am highly motivated to make sure my student have a satisfying experience and are inspired to return. I offer instruction in oils, watercolor, drawing, collage. In earlier years I taught children but now I only teach adults.

Present - 2016
I have a two-hour online oil painting class with Craftsy titled "Essential Painting Techniques".

I am teaching with Path with Art which is a Seattle arts organization that specializes in serving communities that have economical, physical, psychological or emotional challenges.

I am also teaching adult oil painting classes at Artist and Craftsman Supply, in Seattle.

And oil painting classes at University Heights Center, in Seattle

2004-2014
I taught at my gallery, Patrick Howe Gallery, in Seattle. Adult oil classes and workshops. The gallery was closed in 2014 because the property was being redeveloped by the owners of the building.

I have reached many students through my art instruction book "Dramatic Light" (Published in 2004, by North Light Books).

1975 - 1981
I was selected to do several in-services and artist in residencies in elementary and high schools in Colorado State for the Colorado Council on the Arts and Humanities. There I worked with over 300 children.

1970-1975
I taught in The Children’s Program at the Portland Art Museum.

Teaching Style
My teaching style is a balance of structured lessons and individual freedom of expression. The beginners learn the foundational principles of realism and explore aspects of technique, color, value, composition and a full range of painting mediums. With that foundation in place, the more advance students are shown how to bring their own sensibility into their artwork, thereby making it unique and original. And for those students inclined toward abstraction, they are taught how to translate their foundational skills into abstract works.

I offer many demonstrations in my classes and provide technical information in the form of handouts or blog links sent to students. Sometimes I will show slide shows of other artist's work or of aspects of art history that pertain to the lesson at hand. I also tailor the teaching to suit each students level and abilities. In my classes, all questions are welcomed and I encourage a nonjudgmental and supportive classroom environment.

I would be happy to provide recommendations from my adult students and professional art instructor peers.
